ReadSpeaker LLC is a finalist for an award at the Learning Impact Leadership Conference May 4th-7thLearning Initiative The Learning Impact Awards recognize the most powerful and influential uses of technology worldwide in support of learning worldwide. This unique program was created in 2007 for the purpose of recognizing outstanding applications of technology that address the most significant challenges facing the global education segment. Additionally, the Learning Impact Awards program aims to identify repeatable implementation of “efficient IT” practices that can help institutions and educational authorities increase access, create personalized learning environments, improve student engagement and improve actionable assessment. The Virtual High School (VHS) ensures that courses are both multimedia-rich and suitable for all learners is central to The Virtual High School’s (VHS) mission. ReadSpeaker’s leading text-to-speech (TTS) technology is the perfect solution to allow VHS to integrate bimodal presentation of content, helping students improve word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, accuracy and recall, as well as increase motivation and enhance confidence. VHS implemented a pilot of ReadSpeaker’s flagship product, ReadSpeaker Enterprise Highlighting, into their course curriculum on the Desire2Learn LMS platform to help students better understand their assignments and succeed in their courses. After the pilot in 2013, VHS decided to enable TTS in most of their catalog of more than 200 courses. The results of this wide scale implementation were surprising in terms of which students were using the service and how they were using it. Because students download the audio in MP3 files, VHS expects that a number of them do so when in transit. But for reading in general, as Storie Walsh, Director of Instructional Technology at The VHS, states, “VHS found the service an awesome opportunity to leverage existing assets in new ways.” The Virtual High School strives to make content in its extensive catalog of online courses multimedia-rich and suitable for all learners. With over 10,000 students of wide-ranging levels and needs, including language learners, struggling readers and those with visual impairments, VHS is an active proponent of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) philosophy.
