Maximize the Value of Your ReadSpeaker Listen Button

In our implementation steps, customers have access to best practices in how to place the Listen button.But there are always new ways (did you notice the blinking version of our Listen button on this post?) to customize the appearance of our Listen buttons that can encourage your end users even more to use your speech enabled web pages.

An innovative illustration of such an implementation is the one done by KidsHealth. KidsHealth is the most-visited site on the Web for information about health, behavior, and development from before birth through the teen years. On a typical weekday, KidsHealth gets as many as a million visits. One of the things that make KidsHealth special is that it’s really four sites in one: with sections for parents, for kids, for teens, and for educators. KidsHealth is more than just the facts about health. As part of The Nemours Foundation’s Center for Children’s Health Media, KidsHealth also provides families with perspective, advice, and comfort about a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioral issues that affect children and teens.

KidsHealth customized our Listen button when they implemented our web-reading solution to make it blink instead of having the default static version. We were interested in testing this version to see if it could potentially bring more usage.  KidsHealth agreed to do an A/B test on a representative article to see if there would be statistically relevant results when comparing usage on a version with a blinking icon vs a static one. KidsHealth ran the test for the ReadSpeaker Listen button within this article. The control group saw a page containing a dynamic speaker icon (KidsHealth’s default implementation), and the test group saw a page with a static speaker icon.

Final conversion rate for the dynamic icon group was 6.25% (number of clicks on the Listen icon as a percentage of the desktop visits) and that for the static icon group was 4.67% so 34% more usage for the blinking version.

As you consider this result, please keep the following caveats in mind:

  • KidsHealth’s target population (families seeking health information content) may be different, perhaps drastically so, from the population you target, so the results may not generalize.
  • The test was conducted only for non-mobile platforms, and so these results can’t be generalized to mobile devices.
