Neurodiversity & Accessibility: Why Inclusion Has Become a Performance Driver in Your LMS

Discover how to bring together inclusive design and AI-powered text to speech in your LMS, to transform the learning experience, and help deliver success for all learners.

Instructional teams work every day to create learning paths that are effective, engaging, and accessible. Yet despite good intentions, a large portion of digital learning environments — including the most popular LMSs — remain difficult to use for many learners: students with dyslexia, ADHD, multilingual learners, hyper sensitive persons (HSPs), and people with visual or cognitive-attentional disorders.

Neurodiversity is not a marginal exception — it’s part of the reality of every classroom. So what if, instead of “adapting on demand” for a handful of learners, we designed learning experiences that are accessible for everyone from the start?

This was the focus of our recent webinar (in French), co-hosted by Benoit Marchais (Enovation) and Katy Barbosa (ReadSpeaker): understanding how your LMS (in this example, Moodle) + inclusive design + AI-powered text to speech transform the learning experience — and why this approach improves motivation, retention, and success for all learners.

Why Neurodiversity Is Changing the Way We Design Training

Neurodiversity includes a diverse range of cognitive functioning: dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, ASD, giftedness, language disorders, and more.

These profiles learn, navigate, and process information differently.

In a learning context, this results in concrete difficulties:

  • Cognitive overload when facing dense text
  • Frustration with content that isn’t adjustable
  • Difficulty navigating modules
  • Rapid loss of motivation

The goal is no longer to “compensate” for differences, but to create environments that work for everyone — right from the design stage.

UDL: The Framework That Truly Enables Inclusion in Moodle

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational framework that proposes three simple principles for LMSs:

1. Provide multiple ways to access information

Text, visuals, video — and also adaptive audio versions generated automatically through text to speech.

2. Allow multiple ways for learners to express themselves and demonstrate understanding

By integrating accessible reading, writing, and formatting tools.

3. Support engagement by reducing cognitive barriers

Clear navigation, customization options, audio reading to reduce mental load.

When ReadSpeaker is integrated into an LMS like Moodle, these three pillars become automatic.

How AI Text to Speech Strengthens Accessibility… and Engagement

In Moodle, adding a simple “Listen” button allows each learner to transform any content into audio.

This single action brings immediate benefits:

  • Reduced cognitive load
  • Better comprehension for learners with dyslexia or fatigue
  • Support for multilingual students
  • Continuity of learning on the go
  • Adjustable reading pace
  • Visual + audio tracking to improve memory

Research is clear: multimodal access to information significantly improves understanding, motivation, and retention.

Alignment with the EAA: From Compliance to Pedagogical Impact

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) requires platforms and content to be accessible. But the challenge goes far beyond regulatory compliance.

An accessible LMS:

  • Reduces the risk of learner exclusion
  • Minimizes individual accommodation requests
  • Boosts satisfaction and success
  • Improves the overall quality of the learning experience

What You’ll Learn in the Webinar

The webinar discussion explores how Moodle + ReadSpeaker help you quickly achieve a dual goal: regulatory compliance and pedagogical performance — while making learning more inclusive for all cognitive profiles.
