ReadSpeaker TextAid: Literacy support for inclusive learning goes ONLINE

TextAid is a new innovative and fully web-based application where students can get help both with reading longer texts and documents, as well as get some easy to use writing and research tools right in their web browser. By using and developing advanced text-to-speech technology and utilize it in user centric supportive applications normally only found in “computer installed”-software, we can provide help for students who struggles with various reading-, writing- or concentration difficulties. When using TextAid, the student can paste any text into the dedicated reading area and have it read out aloud using high quality computer generated speech. Different accessibility tools are available, including screen masking, reading ruler, as well as the ability to set individual user preferences. Bimodal presentation (that is, the act of reading text whilst hearing words at the same time) has been shown to have numerous advantages for all learners, including those with special needs. These advantages include:

  • Improved word recognition skills and vocabulary
  • Improved reading comprehension, fluency, accuracy, and concentration
  • Improved information recall and learning/memory enhancement
  • Increased motivation and more positive attitude with regard to reading
  • Increased reading self-confidence and perceived performance
